The island monastery of St. Michael's Mount was founded in the 12th century by Benedictine monks. It is a tidal island: at low tide it can be reached by a special path paved along the bottom of the sea, and at high tide it becomes completely inaccessible. St. Michaels Mount is called “the jewel in the crown of Cornwall” and is often compared to the French abbey of Mont Saint-Michel.
